Hopefully the situation should not deteriorate to such a point, especially if all of your paperwork is in order and you have good proof of your status with you. If you have a lost Green Card, sort out the problem immediately, the authorities will likely do all they can to help you rectify the situation, but it some circumstances it could raise problems of you getting employed somewhere if it is found to be missing.
